在驱车穿越奈维达沙漠前往盐湖的途中，皮特•杰克森（Henry Thomas 饰）及其妻子玛丽（Annabeth Gish 饰）因汽车爆胎缘故被克里警官逮捕。克里将夫妇俩带往绝望镇，杰克森恐惧地发现，这个镇上遍布着尸体。当他们意识到自己身处危险之中时，邪恶的克里终于露出狰狞面孔，将皮特射杀。 在监狱中，玛丽遇见卡沃一家、当地人汤姆（Charles Durning 饰）以及作家约翰（Tom Skerritt 饰）。他们计划逃出这个杀人魔窟，并且借助卡沃夫妇小儿子大卫（Shane Haboucha 饰）的神奇力量，众人更得知150年前曾在绝望镇发生的一起惨剧……
